Before you get all up in arms, before you sign a petition or jump on a bandwagon of “conviction”….know where that wagon has been or better yet, where it is going.
In this election cycle I have been bombarded with emails and calls asking me for my time and money. Even though I’m a little weary from it all, I realize it’s the nature of the beast and it’s always a shit storm of chaos and energy around this time. This will all pass of course, and in a few days we will all learn who our local representatives and next President will be. These are exciting times indeed, but these are also times where our emotions can get the better of us.
Without going into too much detail, I was recently sent an email petition that just so happened to be designed to attack someone I know. The petition described why this was being sent out and what “we” could do to stop this sinister figure from ruining early voting through voter suppression. At first glance or without knowing the person it was referring to, I would typically sign it, feel good that I was “doing the right thing”, and move on to the next issue. But, I did know the person, and I happened to know the situation, before hand. Now, the person the petition was designed for; we don’t see eye to eye on numerous issues. However, this petition was a blatant attempt to drum up support at the last minute through sly manipulation, at the expense of my friend. What was even sadder to see was an article that ran in the local paper that told of this certain issue and what would be happening. The only reason it was even published at all was because “one side” claimed it was going to happen this way. In reality though, it ended up not happening that way, at all. You should REALLY and TRULY be careful what you read. Not only did this upset me, it got me to thinking.
How many times are we asked to sign a petition or jump on a bandwagon, join a cause or hand out things but not REALLY know the full details of the issue? We are all guilty of this. We think we are doing the right thing because the “side” we are on has claimed this or claimed that. But, after this episode with the petition I received, I know now that I had better take a closer look at things before I start jumping up and down and yelling.
It’s hard to keep and open mind when we are geared up in an election cycle. Everyone is so sensitive and protective as if their actual lives are at stake. It’s nice to know that people still care and that people are passionate about what they believe in. But, keep in mind that there is a difference between passion and fanaticism. Keep a level head in these next few days and really think about what you stand for and what you are a associated with. Make sure when you jump on a bandwagon you know who’s driving that damn thing and where in the hell it’s headed.
